Family photo sessions are all about capturing those perfect moments, whether it’s the love, laughter, or even the silly faces! But, a little prep goes a long way in making sure everything runs smoothly and everyone feels comfortable. From the right outfit choices to practical things to bring along, there are a few simple steps that can help make your session stress-free and all about the fun. What to bring and prepare for your family photo session:

  • Appearance touch-up essentials
A little lipstick, a hairbrush, and maybe some hairspray—these little items can make all the difference for last-minute touch-ups before the camera starts clicking.

  • Water and Snacks
Stay hydrated and fueled up! Bring along some water and snacks to keep everyone in a good mood (because no one wants a hangry family in the photos!).

  • Ticks and bug spray (if your session is outdoors)
Planning an outdoor shoot in a woody area? Don’t forget the bug spray to keep the bugs away. You’ll be so glad you did!

  • A change of clothes, just in case!
Kids (or adults!) can sometimes get a little messy during the shoot. It doesn’t hurt to bring a backup outfit just in case someone has an unexpected spill.

  • Tint-free/polarized eyeglasses
If anyone wears glasses, try to bring a pair without tint or polarized lenses to avoid glare, reflections, or dark tints.

  • Comfort items for the little ones
For the kiddos, don’t forget their favorite toy or comfort item. It’ll help keep them calm and happy. A happy kid makes for the best photos!

  • Comfy shoes for walking
If you’re rocking those cute but not-so-comfy shoes for the shoot, bring along a pair of comfy ones for walking between spots. You’ll thank yourself later!

Other Things to Think About:

  • Parking tips
First time at the location? Ask me for parking tips before the shoot! Save yourself the stress and bookmark those directions ahead of time.

  • Arrive early
Give yourself a little extra time to get everyone together, calm the nerves, and maybe wrangle those energetic kids. Being early means no rushing, just fun!

  • Don’t forget the weather!
Check the forecast before you leave! If it looks like rain or extreme temperatures, bring along items like an umbrella or an extra jacket. A little weather prep can help keep everyone comfortable and focused on just having fun.

  • Empty those pockets
Put phones, wallets, and keys in a bag before the shoot. And while you’re at it, remove any watches or hair ties from wrists. Nothing should distract from your fabulous looks!

  • Well-rested kids = happy kids
If your little ones need naps, try to schedule one before the session. A well-rested kiddo is far more likely to be cooperative and camera-ready.

  • Keep those smiles & trust the photographer
Most importantly, come with smiles, love in your eyes, and trust that I’ll capture all the amazing moments. Relax, enjoy the moment, and let the photos come naturally!
