10 Tips to help you prepare for a successful Family Photo Session
Planning a family photo session is exciting, but it can also feel a bit overwhelming, especially when you're trying to coordinate everyone for the perfect shot! Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or just want to capture your family in its everyday glory, preparing ahead of time can make all the difference. There are a few things you can do to ensure your session goes smoothly. In this guide, we've put together 10 tips to help you prepare, from what to wear to how to keep little ones entertained, so you can relax and enjoy the moment when the session begins!
1. Prepare the kids for a fun time!
Get your little ones excited about the photo session by talking to them in advance! Let them know it’ll be a fun experience where they get to play games and maybe even be a little silly. If you have a child who tends to get shy or anxious around new faces, don't worry, I’m here to help! You can even show them some of my photos on my “About” page, so they can get familiar with me before we meet!
2. Expect the unexpected (it’s part of the fun!)
As much as we all want everything to be perfect (and I will try my best!), the truth is that life happens, especially when little ones are involved. Kids have off days, and that’s okay! Sometimes they’re just not in the mood for smiling or posing. Don’t stress if things aren’t going according to plan right away, it happens! With a deep breath, a quick reset, and a little extra patience, we’ll get those sweet, real smiles. And don’t worry, I used to teach preschool, so I’ve got tons of tricks up my sleeve to bring out their best! Your main job is to relax, have fun, and enjoy the moment with your family. We’ve got this!
3. Plan clothing ahead of time (and make it fun!)
Clothing can really make a difference in how much you’ll love your family photos! Make sure your kids are comfy and happy with their outfits. In fact, I recommend that you include your child in the process as much as possible. And for babies or toddlers, it’s always a good idea to bring an extra outfit just in case.
You don’t have to rush out and buy new outfits for everyone. Sometimes your favorite, already-loved pieces are perfect! Feeling comfortable and confident in what you wear will help you feel relaxed and natural in front of the camera. Trust me, that confidence shows!

4. Fuel Up & Rest Up for Maximum Fun!
Nothing derails a photo session faster than tired or hungry kids! Trust me, we all know how cranky they can get when they miss a nap or mealtime. So, be sure to pack a snack (nothing too messy, please!) and bring some water in case they need a quick break. A little fuel can go a long way in making everyone feel happy and ready to have fun!
5. Bring an activity to keep the kids engaged!
If your child has a favorite book, toy, or something they love to carry around, bring it along! After all, the stuffed animals are basically a part of the family, aren’t they? Having something familiar to play with can help them relax and forget about the camera. For older kids, fun activities like dancing, playing catch, or piggyback rides can create wonderful, candid moments that make for the best photos. When kids are doing what they enjoy, their joy really shines through!
6. Let your kids be themselves.
Every child is unique, and that’s what makes them so special! Some kids are shy and need a little time to warm up, while others are all energy from the start. No matter how your child shows up, whether they’re shy, wild, or somewhere in between, it’s all good! The best photos happen when you let them be themselves. If they want to run around and pick flowers, let them! If they just want to cuddle with you, that’s perfect too. Snuggles and playful moments are often the most sweet and authentic shots.
7. Choose the perfect spot for your crew!
Minneapolis is packed with picture-perfect locations! From the iconic Stone Arch Bridge to the gorgeous Minnehaha Falls, or the playful vibe of the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, there’s something for every family. Think about your crew’s personality. Do you prefer the urban vibes of the city, or is a park full of greenery more your style? Choose a spot that feels comfy and fun for everyone, especially if you’ve got little ones in tow. It’s all about making sure everyone’s having fun!
8. Be Weather-Ready!
Ah, Minnesota weather—always keeping us on our toes! Keep an eye on the forecast as your session approaches (and I’ll be checking too, don’t worry!). If it’s chilly, layering with thermal wear under your clothes or bringing along a cute jacket or cozy hats will keep you warm and looking cute! If it’s sunny, sunscreen and water are a must to stay comfy. I want you looking great and feeling great!
9. Get Ready for the Candid Magic!
While classic poses are always fun, the real magic happens when you’re just being yourselves! Some of the best family photos come from those sweet, spontaneous moments like a shared laugh, a hug, or those little moments packed full of joy. These candid shots, where everyone is simply being their true selves are often the ones you’ll treasure the most. Trust me, they’re my absolute favorites to capture!
10. Share Your Session Dreams with Your Photographer!
